What you eat around your workout can make a real difference to your energy and recovery. You do not need complicated supplements, just the right balance of carbs and protein at the right time.

Before your workout

Eat a meal with carbohydrates and some protein 1 to 3 hours before training. Carbs top up your energy stores, while protein primes your muscles. Good options include oats with fruit, rice with chicken, or a wrap with lean protein.

  • Prioritize easy-to-digest carbs for quick energy.
  • Include 20 to 30 g of protein.
  • Keep fat moderate so digestion is not slowed down.

After your workout

Post-workout, aim to eat within a couple of hours. A meal with 30 to 40 grams of protein and quality carbs replenishes energy and kick-starts muscle repair. Grilled chicken with rice, a beef and quinoa bowl, or a protein-rich breakfast all work well.

The post-workout window is more forgiving than the fitness industry claims. What matters most is that you eat a solid protein-rich meal at some point after training.
